Welcome to Cowichan Lake, B.C. Canada.

The native population migrated to Cowichan Lake on a seasonal basis to secure food and to trap. They came from the Nitinat and Cowichan coastal areas, by foot or canoe.

The first record of a non-native presence in Cowichan Lake is that of an exploratory party which, under Mr. Pemberton, arrived in Cowichan Bay in 1857. From there they headed up the Cowichan River to the lake and on to Nitinat, using the natives as guides and hunters.

The main credit for the first tangible effort to get a road into the lake is given to William Forrest. In 1884, accompanied by James Tolmie, they proceeded to the lake, led by two Indian guides.

After a two- day trek, Forrest cruised the lake and thought it "the most beautiful spot I had ever seen." He later went to Victoria and interviewed Premier William Smythe in regards to getting a road through to the lake from Pop Jordon's at Sahtlam. Premier Symthe said that when 10-12 settlers moved to the area construction would begin. Forrest assured him that this would not be a problem and as a result was authorized to go ahead and blaze the 13- mile trail from Jordan's to the lake.
